ROBIN BAKER

OF GODS, SOULS AND OTHER SEEDS:
Sex and the Evolution of Religion

Robin Baker’s new book reveals an intimate and far-reaching relationship between sex and religion. Sex, and the struggle to understand it was, he argues, at the heart of all world religions. Whereas initial changes in understanding of sex and procreation went hand in hand with changes in religious beliefs, the major world religions are based on an understanding of human sexual activity that has long been proven erroneous. At a point in history, certain religions stopped evolving alongside our growing understanding of human sexual behaviour. Baker clearly, informatively and entertainingly shows the misconceptions underlying modern world religions, while taking us on a journey from the beginning of time to the present.

Hunter/Gatherers did not link sex with procreation. Babies were made by spirits entering the woman. Men hunted and protected but had nothing to do with parenthood. Once man became agriculturalist and began planting seeds and watching them grow, the idea that man’s sperm contained the seed of humans and was planted in a woman’s fertile soil, took root. Now men had everything to do with parenthood and woman were just carriers. We now know men and women play equally important roles in procreation but do religions today reflect that understanding?

SPERM WARS

Now a modern classic of popular science writing, SPERM WARS is Robin Baker’s revolutionary thesis about sex. Evolution has programmed men to conquer and monopolise women, while women, without ever knowing they are doing it, seek the best genetic input on offer from potential sexual partners. He reveals the new facts of life: 10 per cent of children are not fathered by their ‘fathers’, less than 1 per cent of a man’s sperm is capable of fertilising anything, and a woman is far more likely to conceive through a casual fling than through sex with her regular partner. Baker describes fictionalised scenes and then explains the science behind the actions to demonstrate how our everyday behaviour fits into a pattern of evolution.
Published to acclaim and controversy a decade ago, Sperm Wars turned centuries-old biological assumptions on their head. (375 pages)
